Our Vrbo Review

Vrbo, short for Vacation Rentals by Owner, has become a popular platform for booking unique and often spacious vacation rentals. But how does the booking experience stack up against traditional hotels and travel agencies?

Booking Process:

  • Vast selection of properties: Vrbo boasts an impressive inventory of vacation rentals, from cozy cabins and beachfront villas to trendy lofts and historic cottages. We easily found a charming house that perfectly suited our family’s needs and preferences.

  • Detailed listings: Each listing is packed with information, including photos, amenities, house rules, and even neighborhood guides. This helped us visualize the space and ensure it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

  • Direct communication with owners: Unlike hotels, Vrbo connects you directly with the property owner. This can be a pro or con, depending on your preference. We enjoyed feeling like we were getting a personalized experience and appreciated the owner’s quick responses to our questions.

  • Fees and taxes: Be aware of additional fees like booking fees, cleaning charges, and local taxes, which can add up. Make sure to factor these into your budget when comparing prices.

Overall Experience:

  • Unique and spacious accommodations: Compared to hotels, Vrbo rentals often offer more space, privacy, and a home-away-from-home feel. We loved having a full kitchen, living room, and outdoor space to relax and enjoy family time.
  • Local flair and character: Renting a vacation home can give you a more authentic experience of the local culture and neighborhood. We appreciated staying in a charming historic district and feeling like part of the community.
  • Potential for hiccups: Since you’re dealing directly with individual owners, there’s always a chance of encountering unexpected issues, like maintenance problems or communication breakdowns. While we thankfully didn’t experience any major problems, it’s something to keep in mind.
  • Value for money: Depending on the property and location, Vrbo rentals can be a cost-effective option, especially for larger groups or longer stays. We found our house to be significantly cheaper than booking multiple hotel rooms for our family.
